The proposed bill-S.500 would effectively put me out of business and put those who work for me out of work. I provide short-term loans for many in my community. Without this service, these people will have no where to go for loans of this nature. This measure will have an overall negative effect on the locals and the overall economy !

this is terrible, a lot of people will end up on the streets. If they want to go after these places, how about the payday loans that charge 300% interest monthly. That is what they need to protect us from.

This is just another example of MA legislature smacking the people that have been hurt the most by the recession directly across the face. If anything, with the current economic environment the common sense approach would be to eve loosen restrictions on pawn shops and encourage people to sell the things that are being wasted by taking up space in your house. There are two reasons they would do this 1. because they don't get the amount of taxes they want because products are bought and sold for much less than they are worth and the state wants the taxes on the new item. 2. To try and stop people from pawning stolen goods because this behavior has been swiftly rising. What they don't seem understand is that this behavior is a result of our reps absurd policy making that has done nothing more in this state other than take money from the sector of the public that needs it most. Dick Durbin is a joke and has no business bringing this to the federal level, this is a states rights issue but the problem is that the current administration would do away with state's rights all together if they could find a way to do so. God I miss George Bush, it was nice to have a president that had the guts to get the job done and admit when he was wrong rather than just digging a deeper whole. This whole country is going down the tubes and this is just another indicator of that, apparently our president & his cronies are under the belief private business is a bad thing that needs to be routed out so that the government can control and take over every aspect of our lives. This is the first I'm hearing of this attempt to close pawn shops but I'm not entirely surprised because if it's a private business that has been around since we came to america and played a part in building this nation to what it was a couple of years ago then the president wants to get rid of it because it appears that he wants to knock everything down and start from scratch.

Keep the pawn shops open, these are hard times millions of people have lost their jobs, where are people to go if they need a quick loan, the banks sure don't care, you can't use a credit card because of bad credit which with most Americans got that way due to job losses, do not pass bill S 500.

Pawn shops offer valuable services to people who are in dire need of cash. What takes banks and lenders days or weeks to acquire any amount of loan, pawn shops offer in minutes.

Mr. Durbin I urge you to reconsider bill S. 500. As an elected official your responsability is to look out for those who cannot obtain credit through the usual ways and believe me there are alot of us!. I am an unemployed hard working female who uses my local pawnshop on a regular basis to keep a roof over my head when times are tough ! If you pass bill S. 500 keep in mind that you will be the direct cause of my becoming HOMELESS ! Please take more time to fiqure out another solution that we all can live with,. I am confident that you can! Thank-you Deborah L. Johnston

This is an important service that we need. If it was not for the generosity and kindness of these people, there would have been a lot of hard times. I appreciate that they are there to help me when i have needed help the most, and could not get that help anywhere else. Please help us to help ourselves. Thank you.

Mr. Durbin, after both me and my wife losing our jobs in this global recession, resulting in my credit cards being charged off, our credit score has been dessimated. It's all we can do to provide for our two childeren right now till the economy picks up, and we are both college grads mind you. The pawn shop has been the only venue for me to be able to provide for my family, thank God I have had the assests to pawn and sale. Please leave the pawnshops out of this bill.

I work hard to support my family but sometimes we need a little help. My son and wife cant get jobs right now so what else are we suppose to do to make it?!!!! WE NEED OUR PAWNSHOPS!!!
#7290:

I would like to know how the government expects people to make it without a little help...if they would help us by helping us be able to find jobs then maybe (slim maybe) we wouldnt need to pawn our stuff, something to think about..WE NEED OUR PAWNSHOPS!!!!

My Name is Nelson Alonso. I have been in the pawnbusiness for 13 years. We provide a service to customers when every body else turns them down . To pay a bill for a house payment, a car payment, provide food for their families, funeral expenses, or other, the fees we charge are not so much. We have employee costs. insurance, paper work , storage. These customers depend on pawn shops when banks and loan creditors deny them. Stop listening to a congressman that is being paid by a bank to instate this bill.

Pawn shops loan me small amounts of money when I really need it, to pay my electricity bill, to pay my phone bill, to pay my storage payment, to pay for my bus pass. Many people like myself need these small loans to get through each month. I support pawn shops and so do a lot of other people like myself.

not only are pawn shops one of the only emergency money lending options left in this world today, but they also offer american families the chance to buy used merchandise at a much cheaper rate than msrp.....ie...my son wouldve never got the xbox 360 that he begged for on his birthday if i hadnt been able to get it from the pawn shop(saving me over $250),because buying one new just wasnt an option. PAWN SHOPS ARE CHILDRENS ANSWERED PRAYERS ON BIRTHDAYS AND CHRISTMAS!!!!

The Navajos on the Reservation could not exist without the help of Pawn Shops. This service was the only way to borrow money during the great depression. Pawning does not put a person in debt, they only risk their collaterol.

Not all American's are rich like senators. Many are struggling in this economy and have no other means of getting small loans. Maybe you should look around your state and see how the "real" taxpayers are stuggling. Unless you have worn the shoes you have no idea what it takes to live if you are not RICH.

I have been in business since 1982. we cant operate making samll "risky" loans at 36% apr. I have stores that after the insurance, payroll, taxes. etc. still only break even! During recession in the Carter years to Boom of Clinton years the need for loans to people without credit has not really changed do to economic conditions. We will always have people that need a little help. The family says no, the bank syas, no, we say yes..

We are a traditional pawnshop, and employee 6 people in the $25,000 to $55,000.00 a year range and also offer medical benefits. These people really dont want to be in the unemployment line.

Pawn shops are a vital vein in the economy, Pawnshops effect everyone from the bottom, all the way to the top, w/o pawnshops people wouldn't be able to get items that otherwise weren't able to get, to pawn an item to help pay a medical bill that popped up, fix the car, get groceries, same go for the loans; It's good to help the pawnshops, don't close any of them though, that won't help anyone's situation!

I make 8.50 an hour as a Manager of Arbys and due to my room mate losing his job a few months back, we have had no electricity since February and are facing eviction. I have never used Pawnshops YET but to take them away from us is WRONG on every level! I have crap credit and NO bank would ever loan me even 10 dollars. But a pawnshop would. I already have a load of items ready to pawn just so we can keep our home. Please do NOT pass this bill. Where else are we going to make ends meet as a Country? And also, putting all of those shop employees out of business? Horrifyingly awful!!! Fix what should be fixed: lack of jobs, crap pay and so on. Do not take AWAY from that which we are already suffering from. My GOD, people! Have a heart! I'd much rather pay 20 dollars for every 100 from a shop than suffer a 'you're ineligible' from a bank that would just laugh at me needing 50 to 100 dollars. DO NOT PASS THIS BILL!!!!

For as long as I can remember when I needed quick cash without long term commitments I have gone to my local pawn shop. I can also make purchases from them which I can't do from other lendinf institutions. I look to them for purchases that aI can afford when I can't afford to shop at other businesses. please don't take away pawn shops it would truly create furthur financial hardships for me

Pawn shops have been around for a long time, and have never placed a financial burden on the people who choose to use them like the check cashing stores have. People who have no other way of obtaining quick cash, or a "loan" go there because a bank would not do business with them. In addition, people go to pawn shops just to shop. Pawn shops have never screwed the public like our "legal" banking institutions or our elected officials have and continue to do. If you close the pawnshops, what new institution will you, the government, put in its place that you will regulate, and that you will make a profit on?!? What is freedom of choice, if you continue to take it away from the American people bit by bit?!? Rather than screwing yet another small business, why don't you focus on the real issues in America, i.e.: recession, unemployment, loss of jobs to Mexico, China, etc., health care, nuclear missles, and whether or not you will have your job after the next election. What goes around comes around and the American people are tired of broken promises.

Mr. Durbin, I respect you and am a huge fan of yours. But on this subject, I disagree with you. PLEASE DON'T CLOSE MY LOCAL PAWNSHOP. I am one of those with rather bad credit and can't go to a bank for a loan when I need one. If you lower the interest rate that my pawnshop can charge me, which I thank you for trying to help make my life better, but in the long run, you will be making my life more miserable when I need money. PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS BILL AND THIS IDEA. IN THE LONG RUN, THIS WILL NOT HELP ME AT ALL. PLUS, THERE ARE LOW COST ITEMS I CAN BUT USED FROM A PAWNSHOP THAT I CANNOT AFFORD ANYWHERE ELSE. PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS IDEA.

Can you explain to me, by closing pawn shops, what do you hope to accomplish. Pawn shop's are small businesses that provide an alternative to shopping at big box stores or banks which charge enormous interest rates and then in turn pay those rates to themselves as BONUSES and then ask me to pay them again in the form of a taxpayer bailout. If you have never used a pawn shop, they only charge you one time on the money you give them. As an American consumer, I have the right to stimulate the economy when and where I choose. This bill will take away approx. one-third of American consumers ability to help stimulate the economy. Whether they buy from, or obtain money on their property, in either case they are still pumping money back into the economy. By doing so, they are keeping money flowing and giving the democrats(Hon.Sen.Durbin) to name one, the ability to keep this government operating. Sincerely, Don Hayes

I'm really disappointed in you and your crazy notion to close all of the pawn shops in America. First of all in Texas they charge 18% interest on a loan and you have a choice to get your item out of pawn or extend and just pay the interest month to month. First of all people go to pawn shops because they cannot go to a bank or other finance institutions because of their wages or credit a pawn shop does not ask for credit or blood to get a loan. Banks were given millions and they had bad credit with no stings attached now I would like a loan like that when it was their greed for helping the building industry sell over priced houses to get them off the builders books and the bank would never loose anything on the loans because they were over priced to begin with. Pawn shops are a business, a needed business for the poor folk of this country and putting them out of business to me is against our right as Americans to have a business which I might add feeds a lot of their employees and their families. Banks do not loan people money when they need it and you have to have perfect credit and if you did why would you need the loan from the bank in the first place. I say again the banks had a lousy credit score but without a vote from the voters you people in Washington gave them millions and they do not have to say where it went and I can tell you it is not going to the little guy who needs a loan to get back on his feet again. To close business to give the banks the only way for people to get money to me sounds like there is a movement in Washington to make people desperate. This is not what America is about we still have freedom of choice, I hope. I'm very concerned that a Senator in our government wants to run hard working people out of business. I thought the President wanted to create jobs and help people well this does not sound like it to me. I had a house years ago and the bank charged me 14% for the loan so as you can see 18% is not that much more than the good old boys at the bank charged. I would hope you will reconsider this madness and go do something that is constructive rather than destructive. An American

I work for a pawnshop and we have a high number of customers who depend on us for those short term loans. For the economy how it is, not all people can survive week to week so we are here for them. Passing this bill will put so many people out of work because pawnshops would not be able to survive on the "new" interest rate. People need jobs not jobs taken away.

When I went to school when the teachers asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I should have said " i want to a politician in the senate". You know why? Because its obvious you can be dumb as a box of rocks and a complete moron and still work for the government. It takes someone with an empty head and consious to sit around and think of a way to screw over the economy worse than it already is. So lets get this straight. The unemployment rate is higher than ever and closing down pawnshops and lending institutions will help? The bank already has their panties in a wod and wont loan money so what is going to happen? Oh I know, crime will rise, umemployment will rise, bankruptcies will rise. Guess there is a bright side, the utility and credit card companys will get rich off of the reconnect fee's and late payments everyone will have to pay. I guess if Obama and Senator Durbin will pay our bills for us when 200k people lose their jobs and millions wont get the help of pawnshops everything will be fine. So Im thinking Obama and Senator Durbin should have to put everybody's mortgage, car notes, credit card bills and utility bills in their names. So if they will do that I guess everything will be fine since they never have or had money problems. Anybody that supports this Bill is a complete idiot and obvious sniffed alot of paint as a child. So back to the school thing I guess the teachers can sit back and relax and not teach anymore since it takes a complete MORON to be rich and powerful.

As a young teenager I made plenty of mistakes, that gravely effected my credit (which no one informed me any thing about growing up). Now, that those mistakes have been made, I am still sufferring the consequences. In my hard times, I go to local pawnshops and with the money I am loaned I am able to get groceries until my next paycheck, or get gas. Taking that away from me is removing one more option/resort I am able to have before I go apply for foodstamps/ welfare.

Please do not sign this bill. I use my local Pawn Shop on a fairly regular basis. I don't feel taken advantage of all. In fact, I feel quite confident using their services versus obtaining a loan for 50-100 to hold my family and I over til payday. I, like many others, cannot go the bank for many reasons. Credit history or even the fact as state above, a bank is not going to loan you 50-100 dollars. They want to get you for as much as they can if you qualify. Closing pawn shops would be detrimental to an economy that is already hurting.
